Annual Competition 2010 - Prints

One of the Society's regular events is their Annual Competition and the
section for printed images was held on 3rd March when almost 90 photographs
fell to the scrutiny of Derek Leak, on a very welcome repeat visit.

The quality of the pictures was high. 10 of the photographs were awarded
full marks - and then Derek Leak picked one called 'Please Don't Go Away' as
the overall winner.

This striking picture by Frédéric Landes was taken at the North Norfolk
Railway's 40's weekend and shows a young soldier and his girl in an embrace,
with the military vehicles behind ready to take the young man to war. The
picture is heightened by the treatment given to the colour in the image; the
girl's clothing and the boy's hat are a rich red, but much of the rest of
the picture is shades of near grey.

Here, There and Everywhere

We were entertained on Wednesday 17th February by Peter Yeo. Peter among other distinctions is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, and is a very well-known photographer.

Under the umbrella of Fotospeed (who supply photo printing inks and papers) he gives very entertaining talks about his pictures and his travels.

Peter was introduced to photography whilst training as a Royal Air Force
Apprentice at RAF Hereford in the mid-1950s. At first his intention was to
record the many interesting places his Service career was to take him during
33 years in uniform. Gradually he turned to more pictorial representation of
the places he visited in Europe, the Middle and Far East.

Peter's interests are varied and he will tackle just about any subject. He
started in the darkroom with black and white chemically processed prints,
but now only uses digital cameras, preferring to work in panels of prints on
themes on a wide variety of topics, sport, aviation, landscape and travel
being favourites.

The talk was called 'Here, There and Everywhere', and took members to China
and Belgium among other places closer to home. His subjects included a
transsexual professional model, a Hastings fishing boat and the Great Wall
of China: varied indeed!

A Special One of our Own

On Wednesday, 7th October John Cucksey showed members of North Norfolk Photographic Society (NoNoPS) some of his prints, slides and digital photographs.

John has been an eminent Member of NoNoPS for some years and is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS) as well as being on the Committee of the RPS Travel Group.

So it goes without saying that many of the superb images displayed were of far-off lands ranging from Germany to Africa to the Falklands.

You can see a number of John's images in our Gallery and Portfolio 2008/9

(accessed from the menu at the left hand side of this screen)

A Tour de Force from the Yorkshire Duo

North Norfolk Photographic Society (NoNoPS) entertained - or rather were entertained by - husband and wife team Marjory and Tony Furmston on Wednesday, 23rd September.

It is fair to say that Marjory and Tony, who are both Fellows of the Royal Photographic Society, are very Yorkshire and absolutely irrepressible. Marjory - who has a lovely and lively sense of humour - does most of the talking, and the photographs they showed went from the gorgeous to the quirky, with all stops in between.

The Furmstons had a dual purpose in visiting us: they are regular visitors to the North Norfolk Railway’s 40’s weekend which had been a couple of days before: and they dress the part. Complete with period camera, of course!

A Visit from Tom Mackie

North Norfolk Photographic Society (NoNoPS) were honoured to spend an
evening with world famous landscape photographer, Tom Mackie, on Wednesday,
9th September.

Tom illustrated his talk with many of his photographs, many of which have
appeared in magazines and brochures.

Members were taken in these images to the USA, to Spain, to the Caribbean
and even to Cley! One of Tom’s published books is called ’Photos with Impact’
 - and there was plenty of evidence in his work to show exactly what he
means.

Thanking the speaker, Club Secretary Judy Knights had only one word - ’Wow!’

14th July 2009

At the first of our two summer 'internal, self-judged' print competitions, David Tottman was the winner with his print 'Doorway - Lindisfarne Priory'. This is reproduced in Gallery 3.

29th April 2009

We were honoured by world famous wildlife photographer David Tipling, who showed some of his pictures from all over the world.

David is well-known in Norfolk - he lives locally and is one of the people behind the excellent Photographers' Gallery, near the Post Office in Holt.

One of his recent books - the RSPB Guide to Digital Wildlife Photography - was on display (and for sale!)

If you stick a pin in a map of the world, David has photographed the things living there! He said he especially likes cold places - and nearly got stranded in Antarctica once while there to photograph penguins!

But there were also leopards, a zebra (being eaten by a crocodile) as well as ordinary British Foxes and Herring Gulls.

15th April 2009

The Society’s AGM. The officers reported on a very good year for the club - and the usual routines of election of Officers for the coming year and approval of accounts took place.

Trophies were awarded to: Judy Knights (Photographer of the Year), Margaret Cattermull (Progress Cup), Nathan Crosby (Promising Newcomer), Robin Johnson (Canada Cup), Judy Knights (Annual competition - Prints), Alan Dedman (Annual competition - Projected), Roland Riddell (Best All Rounder - Prints), Judy Knights (Best All Rounder - projected), John Cucksey (Portfolio - Prints), Judy Knights (Portfolio - Projected), David Tottman (2 Summer Cups - Prints and Projected). A number of certificates were also awarded to members achieving second places, etc.

During the AGM a lively discussion took place on the subject of the format for competitions in years to come. It was decided to drop slides as a category and do some shuffling of categories and trophies for the year commencing 2010.

After a (late) refreshment break, Bill Day gave what turned out to be not half an evening but half an hour of discussion on judges and judging. Always a lively topic, this one!

1st April 2009

We welcomed Buxton Photographic Club to the annual Battle between the two clubs.
Also welcome was Derek Leak, who judged the contest. He is almost a member of the club now - he and his wife Judy gave an Audio-Visual presentation of their own pictures only a fortnight before. This time, though, his task was to judge 40 prints - 20 from each club.
At half-time, NoNoPS was ahead, but at the finish Buxton won by 156 to 154 marks: a very close finish indeed!
The next meeting of the Society will be the Society’s AGM  at Loades Hall, Holt on Wednesday 15th April at 7.30 pm and visitors will be very welcome, but of course, not able to vote! The serious business will be lightened somewhat in the second half of the evening which is “Billed” as ‘Half an Evening with Bill Day’. Bill is quite irrepressible - sometimes unstoppable - and this is sure to be entertaining. Will half an evening be enough?

23rd March 2009

A Battle against old rivals Brancaster! Won by NoNoPS by 159.5 points to 148. Special thanks to Jane Harper - who got a 10 with her 'Cromer Pier' and to Joan Tye (9.5 for 'Orang Utang') and to Judy Knights (Porcelain Fungus) and John Cucksey (Malachite Kingfisher) who bith scored 9. And to fudge, Dave Jordan.

18th March 2009

Judy and Derek Leak gave an audio visual presentation of photographs they have taken on their travels.
Both are well-known photographers - and Derek Leak in particular is a frequent visitor to the club as a photographic judge.
The show was in fact a sequence of shows. First came slides from Judy Leak of butterflies and moths, showing their development from egg to larva to pupa and to fully developed insect. Then - Derek's turn - a fascinating show of photographs by the Victorian Author and Solicitor G C Davies of the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads interspersed with Derek's own photos of the same locations today. Thirdly, a set of photographs taken by Judy and Derek on a visit to Florence - the city, the Duomo and many of the works of art.
After the break, a photographic journey from Cley to Gorleston and then the high-spot for many: Judy and Derek are self-confessed 'Lakeland fanatics' and treated members to photographs they have taken on their many walks in the English Lakes and Fells. All the shows were immaculately put together with one slide fading seamlessly into the next and accompanied by carefully selected music.

Annual Competition Result!

The second part of the North Norfolk Photographic Society Annual Competition took place in Holt on Wednesday 4th March. The contest for projected images took place a few weeks ago - this time it was the turn for Prints.

Judge for the evening was Dave Jordan who is a teacher of Information and Communications Technology at Dereham Northgate High School, and is a holder of the LRPS - Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society - and a respected photographic judge and speaker. It was his second visit to the Club in less than a year - last May he talked to the club about colour.

Dave is a Yorkshireman who came to Norfolk getting on for 20 years ago and has been involved with Camera Clubs for some 30 years. A most entertaining judge, he had 55 photographs from which to pick one winner - which was ‘On the Way to Lindisfarne’ by Judy Knights.

Judge Jordan then had to choose between this and Alan Dedman’s ‘A Field in February’ - which had been the winner of the projected section. His choice was Judy’s Print - which is now deemed to be the Society’s ‘Image of the Year .
This can be viewed from the Annual 2009 Menu at left

For She's a very fine Fellow!

On 18th February we enjoyed  an illustrated talk ‘My Mind’s Eye’ by Joy Hancock FRPS MPAGB. Joy is well known in Norfolk (and further afield) and she and her husband Mike are members of the Norfolk Photography Group photo club at Mundesley.

Joy worked her way up the rungs of the ladder of the Royal Photographic Society and was admitted as a Fellow a few years ago and showed - as the climax to her talk - her award winning submission of an astonishing panel of 20 images of wild flowers.

No camera was used in these pictures! The background was created with Sun Prints - allowing the light to shine on (say) a fern placed on sensitive paper which when developed shows the shape of the plant‘s shadow - which is how the very earliest photographs in history were made.

‘Photographs’ of wild flowers were then taken using a flat-bed scanner- too many to mention;  a lot of them came from the Bayfield Wild Flower centre near Letheringset.  The individual flowers (often several dozen in one image) were scanned separately and the whole picture assembled in a computer before being printed.

Best All Rounder Competition - Prints

It was the turn for the Printers to have their work judged in the second part of the Society’s ‘Best All Rounder’ competition. Judge for the evening was the charismatic and ever popular Jim Till from Brancaster - an old friend of the Society!

14 members submitted entries - one Landscape, Portrait, Nature study and ‘Open’ picture from each.

Best All Rounder for the Prints section was Roland Riddell with an evocative shot of Braunston Wharf, a beautiful portrait of Kathy, a stunning photo of a Barn Owl leaving a barn, and one of the Red Arrows in Diamond Nine formation, which he entitled ‘Precision Flying’. See BAR 2009 at left.

Judy Knights was second, and Brian Singleton and John Cucksey tied for third place.

Best All Rounder and Annual Comps - projected sections

On Wednesday 21st January the evening was devoted to projected images - both slides and digital - and there were two contests.

T
he Best All Rounder requires members to enter 4 images, (landscape, portrait, nature and open) which are judged as a group to choose - the Best All Rounder! The other competition was the "Annual" competition when up to 3 entries may be submitted, judged individually to choose the image of the year.

Judge Daphne Hanson CPAGB came from darkest fenland and gave a sparkling performance whilst commenting upon and marking the 108 pictures shown. Winners were Best All Rounder Judy Knights, and in the Annual Competition Alan Dedman.
[Winners' pics can be viewed from the Menu to the Left]

7th January 2009

We welcomed member Gordon Follows ARPS MPAGB EFIAP/b, who is a well known naturalist as well as a superb photographer. His talk was entitled 'Through my Eyes - Part 2'. He gave Part 1 a year ago!

Gordon's talk was beautifully illustrated by a host of his photographs: landscapes as well as wild life. He took members from Florida's everglades (complete with alligators) up through Yellowstone Park and on to Alaska and (in particular) its brown bears and salmon. Then across the Atlantic to Namibia's enormous sand dunes and central Africa's zebras and 'big cats'.

Some of Gordon's photos are in the Gallery 9.

Portfolio Competition

On 3rd December, North Norfolk Photographic Society (NoNoPS) welcomed back Mr Norman Laughland CPAGB to judge the club's Portfolio Competitions.

The contest requires members each to submit 3 images on a theme of their own choice; each picture is marked individually out of 10, and then the panel of three is marked out of 20 points.

Winner in the Prints section out of 16 excellent entries was John Cucksey with a panel of 3 superb photos of The African Darter - sometimes called the Snakebird, a water bird of tropical Africa. John scored 48 out of the possible 50 marks. See Portfolio in the menu at left hand side.

The Projected Image section - which now includes digital pictures as well as slides - attracted a total of 69 images from 23 entrants and again, the standard was very high. The best of the slides was judged to be 3 autumn shots by Roland Riddell - but the overall winner was Judy Knights with a digital panel of Venetian masques. Judy scored 49 out of 50 for her three truly beautiful photographs.

Viewing Evening

At the Meeting on 19th November members saw the projected images from the 33rd Smethwick International Exhibition, covering subjects from Open, to Portrait, Music & Dance, Glamour and Sport.  There was an original entry of 7500 but we only saw the best as chosen by a panel of judges.  It was a good opportunity to see what the rest of the world is doing and to give us an idea of what we need to achieve should we ever want to enter world wide events.  It also led to a healthy discussion on what we had seen and how little judges know!!  Plus ca change.

After the tea break we looked at some of our own work, both digital and prints and Judy Knights gave a short demonstration of Photoshop techniques and said that we hope to run an evening on that theme in our next programme.

Portrait evening

On Wednesday 5th November John Miller brought along models Nicky Langley and Owen Watkins, and some sophisticated studio flash and background screen equipment, so that members could take portraits under studio conditions.

Helped along by expert NoNoPS member John Miller, cameras were soon clicking away, with the photographers trying to amuse and to get the best from Nicky and Owen - who it has to be said were extremely patient and tolerant!

Nicky and Owen had to leave after a while, and their place was taken by Alison Elliot - who enjoyed the process just as much as everyone else. Also, a Table-Top studio was set up in the adjoining room to provide further experience of picturing small static objects.

The Society’s thanks go out to John Miller and all the models for a constructive and fun evening.

Norman Laughland

It was ‘back to school’ again for members of North Norfolk Photographic Society (NoNoPS) on Wednesday 22nd October.

Norman Laughland, who comes from Oulton Broad and holds the Credit Merit award of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain as well as being an accredited Judge, gave an interesting demonstration of Photoshop, the best known of the Digital Photography management software packages.

He tried to give information to the beginners - of whom there were a few among the members present - and experts - of whom there were many.

Norman’s own work is mostly landscapes and portraits, often in black and white. He likes to photograph The Broads and Seascapes and says he finds photography to be a wonderful hobby which he likes to pass on through his teaching. He reckons he is better at photography than at golf. He did not tell us just what his handicap might be.

Peter Yeo
Peter Yeo who is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society (among other distinctions) gave an illustrated talk to members of NoNoPS (North Norfolk Photographic Society) on 8th October.

Peter is a very well known photographer and photographic judge and came with dozens of his own photographs illustrating his skill.

He especially emphasised that good pictures can be seen in the most ordinary places: one way streets, flaking painted doors, street lights left switched on in daylight and so on.

Peter Yeo travels all over the place giving his talks and judging photo contests and told members to be on the look-out for interesting shapes and colours. Even in Leicester he found interesting pictures: some said this was some challenge!
Peter is sponsored by Fotospeed - suppliers of photo printing papers and inks among other things, and NoNoPS members were very interested in the wide range of samples that he brought with him.

Summer Cup 2008

This event took place on 24th September and was judged by Bob Dawson CPAGB. The entrants submitted a panel of 4 prints (mounted on one board) or a group of 4 slides or digital images for projection, in both cases on the subject 'On the Farm'.

Described as 'David Tottman's Night' - he won both the Print and Projected Images sections. Second equal in the prints section out of 14 entries were Margaret Cattermull and Robin Johnson; second in the projected images section was Leah Woodhouse.

Some of the images can be viewed at 'Ditto - Summer Cup 2008'  from the Menu to the left of this.

A Fresh Look at Photographs
North Norfolk Photographic Society (NoNoPS) broke with tradition on Wednesday 16th July. The Society usually shuts up shop for the Summer months, but in response to requests from some members, this was the first of two special meetings arranged this year.

The evening was an informal Photo Competition; the 20 entries were judged by secret ballot by the members themselves - and then before the identity of the photographers was disclosed, were discussed by the 22 members and guests present. They found that they could be very rude about their friends' work when they did not know who they were being rude about!

The discussion was bravely led by Bill Day - in spite of a dental difficulty. The winner on the evening was Judy Knights with a stunning black and white shot of St Mark's Square in Venice.

Fairhaven Gardens on June 18th.
The Society does not hold regular meetings during the summer months - but holds a couple of outside meetings which have always been very enjoyable. This time, the weather forecast was pretty depressing - but 11 brave souls found their way to these fascinating gardens!

After a very grey morning there were 'flashes of inspiration' - commonly called sunlight - in the early afternoon! Providing you were in the right place at the right time with your camera 'at the ready' it was possible to capture some of the lovely reflections of the trees and amazing water foliage.

John Cucksey - armed with tripod and long lens - concentrated on birds from the water frontage, and it was lovely to see the yellow Iris standing out amongst the massive leaves of the Skunk cabbage.

Unlucky with the weather this year for their outside events - members are keeping their fingers crossed for July 4th - a visit to witness the Re-enactments at Kentwell Hall.

Meeting on 14th May 2008

We went 'back to school' on 14th May. The occasion was a talk by Dave Jordan who is a teacher of Information and Communications Technology at Dereham Northgate High School, but came as a holder of the LRPS - Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society - and a respected photographic judge and speaker.

Dave is a Yorkshireman who came to Norfolk getting on for 20 years ago and has been involved with Camera Clubs for some 30 years. His talk was on the theory and use of colour in photography - a talk he said he first prepared in the 1980's.

Dave Jordan at the start of his very polished talk said that if an image does not need colour, you'd do better to use black and white. But he went on to emphasise the use and power of colour to achieve photographic excellence.

Members were told how the spectrum of colours are all part of white light, and how complementary colours - such as red and green or yellow and purple - work with or against one another. With a superbly illustrated set of projected images - most of them his own - Dave Jordan showed how different shades of colour can be used to good effect, be the desired effect a striking or a soothing one.

NoNoPS' regular meetings in Holt have now ended for the 2007/8 season - but will resume in September.

The Annual General Meeting of the North Norfolk Photographic Society was Held in Loades Hall, Holt on Wednesday 16th April 2008
There were 24 members present.

Meeting on 2nd April 2008

Members met for a ‘Photo Forum’ and were asked to bring photographs and/or computer-based images for discussion and comment and in particular to air any problems (photographic ones, anyway) they are having and for which other members may be able to help find a solution.

John Humberstone started the evening by showing a number of prints of photographs he had taken over the years. He emphasised the importance of shadows in an image, and also made some comments about how one of his prints in particular had received greatly different treatment by different judges.

This led on to Bill Day showing some of his pictures. Bill is also a well known photographic judge and tried very hard to persuade members that judges know what they are doing and treat everyone fairly. But he did say that to him, it matters not whether the final result that he is judging is a straightforward un-adorned photograph or a compilation of several merged on a computer - it is the final picture that is judged.

This was good news for some members - perhaps not so good for others!

During the later part of the evening, some experimentation with a new digital projector took place - which proved to demand something of a steep learning curve! In particular, a sequence of John Miller’s excellent portraits and wedding photographs was shown. It was fascinating to see these - previously only viewed as prints or on a computer monitor - on the “Big Screen”.

This was a change from the published programme: the planned Photoshop Evening with Norman Laughland will now be on Wednesday 30th April at Loades Hall, Holt starting at 7.30 pm.

Meeting on 19th March 2008

Contests between Camera Clubs are often called ‘Battles’ - and the indomitable Jim Till led his Brancaster Brigands into battle against North Norfolk’s Holt Hordes!

Umpire for this occasion, Derek Leak, came with his wife Judy. Old friends of NoNoPS, Judy and Derek are highly respected photographers and Derek is a well known and very well regarded Judge.

Derek’s task was to judge an equal number of prints and slides from each club, awarding each a mark out of 10. There were a number of “10’s” and almost all the others were 7’s, 8’s and 9’s - testament to what Derek Leak described as the very high standard of the entries from both Societies.

The result was a win for North Norfolk - to their delight! With Prints they won by 99 marks to 90, and with slides it was a 90-90 draw - making NoNoPS the overall winners by 189 to 180.

Meeting on 5th March 2008

Prints Section of the Annual Competition

Members met for the first time in their new home, the Loades Hall adjoining the Methodist Church in Holt.

It was found to be very comfortable and highly suitable for the purpose which on this occasion was the club’s Annual Print Competition. Whilst for all other competitions in the year, images entered previously cannot be entered again, the object of this one is to find the best of the year - so the restriction does not apply and each member can enter up to 3 of any of this year’s prints.

This produced a phenomenal entry of over 70 prints, and it fell to Gary Hacon - an old friend of the Society - to judge them. This he did with his usual care and humour, whittling it all down to 3 prints, from which he chose as winner Alan Dedman’s ‘Cold Morning’ - a stunning black and white landscape scene full of moody tones and textures.

Gary then had to choose between this and the image of an Arctic Tern by John Cucksey that had won the slides section of the competition a few weeks before. His decision went to Alan Dedman and so it is ‘Cold Morning’ that will be reproduced on the Society’s Programme cover next season.

Meeting on20th February2008

At our last meeting Society member, Bob Eaton, showed us step by step how to use software such as Pictures to Exe or ProShow Gold to produce an audio/visual display of our photographs. In the final production the images are projected in a chosen order with suitable accompanying music. Text and voiceover can be added along with a selection of plain, fancy or simply ludicrous transitions between the images and the end product can be viewed via a digital projector or on a TV screen. Those tedious holiday albums will be taking on a new dimension now.

There will be a ‘battle’ with Brancaster Camera Club on March 19th and Norman Laughland will be presenting ‘A Photoshop Evening’ on April 2nd.

Meeting on 6th February2008

Prints Section of the Best All Rounder Competition

We’re on the move!

NoNoPS has outgrown the lounge room at the Holt Community centre and will be relocating to the Loades Hall at the Holt Methodist Church from March 5th where the Annual Print Competition is being judged. The winning print will then go ‘head-to-head’ with the winning slide to determine the Image of the Year, which will grace the cover of next season’s programme. Before that we have one more meeting at the Community Centre on February 20th when Bob Eaton will be explaining ‘All About AVI’ (Audio Video Interleaved), digitally projected images with commentary and/or music.

The Society’s popularity and increase in membership has also produced an increase in the number of entries in print competitions. This was highlighted in the recent ‘Best All Rounder’ when Jim Till CPAGB judged 109 prints on 5 set subjects. It was a mammoth task but Jim managed to comment on and mark each picture. The winner was John Humberstone scoring 38/40 points (see B.A.R. Prints).  Congratulations to John and to the joint runners-up Brian Singleton and Barrie Price.

There are moves afoot to make the numbers of print entries more manageable – watch this space, maybe it is not just our venue that is changing.

Meeting on 23rd January 2008
Slides Section of the Best All Rounder and Annual Competitions

Since the advent of digital photography there are fewer members using conventional film to produce prints and slides. Some clubs no longer use slides at all whereas NoNoPS has tried to maintain slides as one facet of its competitions. The Best All Rounder (5 set subjects) and The Annual (any 3 images) slide competitions were held on the same night with visiting judge, Brian Harvey ARPS, commenting and marking both matches. Overall winner for the Best All Rounder was Roland Riddell whose selection included a frosted canal scene, a godwit and light trails around a city at night. The Annual winner was John Cucksey who produced three equally high-scoring images and the judge chose Arctic Tern to be the overall winner. This picture will go ‘head-to-head’ with The Annual print competition winner in early March.
After the break Brian turned the tables on members with a superb audio/visual presentation of some of his work. Members were treated to separate productions, with appropriate accompanying music, of various rustic scenes, thought-provoking images of past battles and a wonderful selection of images of dahlias taken from a single colourful border at Anglesey Abbey, Cambridge. Each bloom emerging from the previous one in harmony with the music – delightful!

Meeting on 9th January 2008
A truly wonderful show of slides.

Gordon Follows ARPS came with his wife Judith to give a show of pictures which he called 'Through My Eyes' - photos he has taken in places as far apart as the Farne Islands, India, Italy, USA and plenty of other places as well!

Gordon's main interest is in wildlife photography and there were pictures of lions, seals, terns, skuas and even a dead rabbit! But as well there were scenic photos of the hills of Tuscany, of English woodland, of washing hanging on a washing line and of an Indian worker hand-painting an advertising billboard, perched on a very fragile looking bamboo scaffold. And it all was given with a commentary that was as humorous as it was informative.

The Society is delighted to welcome Gordon and Judith as new members: they have moved to our region from Yorkshire and we are very pleased to have them.
See some of Gordon's images at Gallery 9

Meeting on 5th December

NoNoPS held their annual ‘Portfolio Competition’ on Wednesday 5th December. In a crowded Holt Community Centre, Judge Joy Hancock had the unenviable task of assessing 69 Prints and 33 Slides - presented in groups of 3 as a panel.

The pictures were judged individually and as a ‘matching’ panel out of a possible 50 marks. The standard - both of the pictures and of the judging - was high.

The Prints section was won by Jane Harper with a panel entitled ‘Dogs’ which came in for special praise from Judge Joy. Second was Richard Kelham (‘Smile Please’) and third Brian Singleton (‘Arctic Scenes’).

Roland Riddell won the Slides group - with his 3 photos of squirrels. Second was John Cucksey (’Birds of the Farne Islands’) and third Judy Knights (’Close Encounters of the Flower Kind’).

Meeting on 21st November

Images of Nature: photographs and music presented by David Boulton.

David left his job as a Norfolk postman a few years ago to become a professional photographer and gave a lovely display of his pictures of flowers, animals and scenery from throughout Britain. Many images were drawn from his local surroundings around Norfolk and Suffolk, but a lot of his favourite places in the Yorkshire Dales, the Derbyshire Peak District and the Lake District were there too.

The display was accompanied by soothing music and the result was a peaceful evening - looking at someone else’s photographs for a change!

Meeting on 7th November

Riches beyond the dreams of many of us?

Chris Simpson with his son Tom visited North Norfolk Photographic Society on Wednesday 7th November. Chris is a partner in the prestigious ‘Norfolk Photographic Centre’ at Nelson Place, Dereham, nationally noted for sale, service and repair of hi-tech photo equipment.

Chris and Tom brought with them a mouth-watering selection of equipment: some of the lenses alone had retail values of several thousands of pounds.

The evening was to give NoNoPS members a demonstration and tutorial in macro-photography - the sort of close-up work needed for pictures of small insects and flowers. Special macro lenses were shown by Chris and by NoNoPS member John Humberstone, as were various flash techniques - including ring flash (where a circular flashgun is fitted around the camera lens) and a DIY array of 2 ordinary flashguns mounted on a bit of an old washing machine!

The second half of the session gave members a chance to handle the kit and to take their own photographs of an interesting collection of flowers, butterflies and even a snake! Fortunately, they all stayed very still for the cameras - perhaps because they were not really alive!

Meeting on 24th October 2007

North Norfolk Photographic Society (NoNoPS) saw Images from the Masters on Wednesday 24th October.

Bob Eaton presented a show of pictures from recent Exhibitions of work by members of the Royal Photographic Society and of the East Anglian Federation of Camera Clubs.

One surprising aspect was the number of black and white pictures that were presented as slides - one always thinks in terms of colour slides and this show proved that this is not necessarily the case.

Most of the images - especially those from the RPS exhibitions - were of wonderful quality. However, there were some which NoNoPS members thought were no better than some of their own! One of the best was one of our own: a photograph of a squirrel carrying her young to a place of safety by our own Roland Riddell.

It was also announced that NoNoPS now has its own web-site. This shows dates and details of the Society's meetings and other up-to-date news from time to time together with some examples of members' photographs and contact details. Hopefully, this will help anyone interested keep in touch with what is going on.
